It's National Vitamin C Day and what better way to celebrate the lovely orange colour that comes to mind when we think of vitamin C.
This impressive vitamin is well-known for its importance in skincare and internal health, with good reason. As a Dermal Therapist, it's my job to know what ingredients are needed and when to introduce them into your skincare routine. Some of the benefits from Vitamin C that I love the most for skin and inner-health benefits include:
Vitamin C is a great pigment inhibitor, which means it has the ability to slow down the production and formation of pigment cell overproduction. A more even skin tone can give the appearance of a brighter complexion.
- Combats Free Radicals (Antioxidant Protection)
Free radicals are those pesky toxic unstable molecules that can cause premature ageing and skin havoc. Thankfully, vitamin C has the ability to combat free radicals while also protecting and slowing the depletion of collagen and elastin. Hello there, antioxidants!
- Amazing for dry skin!
Vitamin C is your best friend if you have dry skin, why? well it helps your lipid barrier which is responsible for preventing water loss in the skin.
- Collagen Elastin and immune support
Vitamin C is a critical micronutrient. It aids in the defence of your immune system by supporting multiple cellular functions of your body's adaptive immune systems. Because it is an antioxidant, it can also fight free radicals in the body, which reduces inflammation and boosts immunity. As a result, applying vitamin C topically is just as important as taking it internally.

When to use Vitamin C ?
That being said, when is the best time to use Vitamin C and where should it be included in your skin care routine?
I like to think of vitamin C as energy and protection for the skin, so I want my skin to look and feel its best during the day. When you would incorporate vitamin C into your routine depends on the type of product. For example, if it's a serum, apply it to clean, dry skin; if it's an oil, apply it as the last step before moisturising.
