Whats the difference between a dry skin and a dehydrated one? Unlike dehydrated skin, which needs water, dry skin needs lipids. Dry skin is typically genetic and feels dry all over your body and will feel better when oil rich products are used on it. Dehydration is different in that its water depletion that gives it a dry, tight and taut feeling. Dehydration can come and go depending on what you do and use on your skin. Dehydration is more of a condition, whereas dry skin is a skin type.
The skin’s lipid barrier is critical for keeping dryness out and locking moisture in. When the lipid barrier is compromised, the skin becomes more vulnerable to moisture loss and extrinsic factors such as weather changes or environmental stress. This leads to signs of dryness such as flaking, dullness, roughness, tightness, itching, irritation and cracking.
Our skin lipids can be depleted by internal factors such as ageing and genetics as well as external factors such as the environment. The products that we choose can affect the skin too. Water-based cleansers with stripping agents give that squeaky clean feeling, but they remove skin lipids and damage proteins that are critical for preserving moisture.
To restore and prevent dry skin from becoming worse, lipids need to be replenished, nourished and protected. Dermalogica has enhanced the performance of Intensive Moisture Balance, the go-to moisturiser for dry skin.
This enhanced product, intensely moisturises a dry, depleted skin with the Bio Replenish ComplexTM which delivers a proven combination of key barrier lipids to help enhance the skin’s natural resilience and support barrier recovery. A Prebiotic Chlorella Algae complex helps rebalance the skin’s natural microbiome by fostering “good” bacteria. Our favourite Hyaluronic Acid, combined with Echinacea Purpurea, Centella Asiatica and Aloe Barbadensis, locks in hydration to help enhance the skin’s moisture content and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
Dermalogica have also created a NEW Intensive Moisture Cleanser. Full of clever ingredient technology like the Lipid-enriched surfactant system, it cleanses skin while helping to minimise damage of vital proteins and lipids that defend against dryness. The Bio Replenish ComplexTM, combined with phytoactives from Coconut and Murumuru Seed Butter help protect barrier lipids and preserve the skin’s natural resilience. Finally, invigorating extracts of Citrus, Palmarosa and Jasmine refresh tired skin.
Together, these innovations can help make a life-changing difference for dry skin, maintaining a healthy skin lipid barrier.
Tips for a dry skin:
- Avoid harsh cleansers that strip the barrier layer.
- Avoid cleansing with hot water which can damage your barrier and dry out your skin. Use lukewarm water instead.
- Avoid ingredients like mineral oil as they "sit" on the surface of the skin. Whilst you may get initial relief for dry skin, it does little to restore the barrier function.
- Use a hydrating toner after cleansing and before your moisturiser enhances the hydration level of your skin.
- Wearing a sunscreen will also help protect the barrier of your skin.
- Use a nourishing moisturiser morning and night to restore your lipid barrier.
Do you suffer from a dry skin? Then the combination of the NEW Intensive Moisture Cleanser and the newly enhanced Intensive Moisture Balance is for you!
