The good news on facial oils.
Facial oils seem to be gaining mass popularity at the moment but the truth is they have been around for a while. From ancient beauty care to today’s skin care formulations, facial oils are true skin saviours when it comes to skin that is dehydrated, dry and lacklustre.
Facial oils comprise of oils from botanicals derived from seeds, nuts, kernels and the flesh of plants as well as essential oils from plants, roots and flowers. These oils are jam packed with antioxidants, polyphenols and vitamins that our skin just simply loves.
But not all oils are good oils… Synthetic, cheaper alternative oils and petroleum derived oils like mineral oil are not great for the skin. Mineral oil is occlusive, meaning that it sits on the surface of the skin, a bit like cling wrap, which in turn can lead to clogging, whiteheads and milia. Sadly, synthetic fragrance oils unlike essential oils do not contain the same therapeutic benefits of their true counterpart.
Facial oils are designed to protect and hydrate by locking in moisture. They help to restore lost barrier lipids giving the skin suppleness and can turn a lack lustre skin into the dewy glowing skin we all want.Barrier lipids or natural protective oils play an important part in preserving the health of our skin. When our barrier is compromised, trans epidermal water loss occurs more readily which means that our skin becomes dry and dehydrated. This can lead to sensitivity and pre-mature signs of skin ageing.
Many factors can contribute to barrier depletion such as ageing, over use of exfoliation products and skin stripping ingredients like alcohol based toners. Stress, UV exposure can also be additional sources of lipid depletion.
The good news is that we can restore these barrier lipids with facial oils that are rich in phytolipids and when it comes to good oils, Dermalogica use a combination within their formulations that have multiple benefits for the skin;
Argan Oil is an excellent source of antioxidants and provide an enriched source of fatty acids to help reinforce the barrier lipid layer of the skin.

Jasmine Oil is a highly fragrant essential oil that has skin softening properties.
