According to Instagram, the most popular way to give yourself some TLC is to create a magical oasis in your bathroom and post a picture of you Instagram worthy self-care bath moment. This is totally not the case at all, I mean, a bath is a great way to unwind and de-stress but it isn’t the only way. When it comes to “self-care” there is no perfect or one size fits all way to go about it.
Self care is such a broad term these days and it can be hard to know where to start. Self care is totally about you and your needs, whether that means everyday for 30 minutes or once every few weeks.
Here are our top tips on giving yourself some TLC so you can be the best version of yourself both physically and mentally:
1. Drink plenty of water!
Its so important to stay hydrated, not just for our physical health but our mental health too.
Water plays such an important part in our overall health. When we are hydrated we experience less headaches, are skin is much brighter, we have fewer cravings for naughty snacks and food and we sleep better. All these points are just a few reasons why you should aim to drink at least 2-3L of water everyday. When your body is happy and hydrated it is able to focus on other things such as decreasing stress and clutter in the brain, which in turn = a happier, clearer mind :)
2. Write down 5 things at the end of everyday that you are grateful for.
We all have something to be grateful for no matter how crappy your day was, fresh air, two legs, food, a home, a car etc. etc. practicing gratitude daily is just one step towards a happier, calmer and more positive & productive version of yourself.
3. Try that yoga class.
Yoga works wonders at calming excess androgens in the body and freeing your mind.
Aim to start your day on that yoga mat, with anything from a quick 5 minute yoga stretch to a 45 minute full body flow. Boost the mental effects of yoga by adding in a 5-10 minute meditation session after your yoga workout too.
4. Get some sleep!
You would think this point was simple enough. However, most adults sleep less than 7 hours every night. Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each and every night. When you are sleeping, your brain rids itself of toxins, organises memories and clears pathways in the brain to bring you clarity and clam when you wakeup. Not to mention your body metabolises all the food you consumed that day and works at preparing your body for the day ahead. Yep, you can in fact sleep your way through self care!
5. Write down that negativity on paper
Write down the negative talk and self doubt you experienced that day, and combat that with what you know for a fact to be true. Putting these down on paper helps you to acknowledge and confront the negativity without letting it overtake the positive in your life. When we are honest with ourselves we are able to grow, change and be much more comfortable in our own skin.
6. Do a digital detox
Due to technology, we are literally contactable 24/7 pretty much everywhere we go. Boundaries around work emails, texts and calls or even just instagram and facebook, can be very beneficial to your body and mind by allowing you to unwind before bed, switch your mind off for the day and allows you time to get that 7-9 hours of sleep without thinking about reaching for your phone!
